PRIME YOUR BRAIN FOR SUCCESS!

  • August 7-11
  • 9 AM-12 Noon

Executive function (EF) is at the core of everything kids and teens are asked to do each day at home and school, and yet, their brains are not fully wired for this kind of sophisticated thinking. As Dr. Milam noted in her guest head’s message in January, “Most important for educators, parents, and caregivers is the knowledge and very clear understanding that executive function skills are just that: SKILLS! Like pitching a baseball, kicking a soccer ball, or playing an instrument, people are not born with skills—they are learned through teaching, positive reinforcement, practice, and attention to the explicit and implicit application.”

In this summer offering, students will learn skills and strategies to improve their planning, organization, and time management to become more independent, attentive, and mindful scholars. The EF summer workshop will be fun and engaging, with lots of movement, activities, and social interaction that promote agency, self-awareness, and self-advocacy. Additionally, students will be invited to share the tips and tools they already have in place and learn from one another.

Students will feel confident about the new school year having armed themselves with some tools and strategies to tackle these challenges.

Some specific skills include:

  • Planner preparation
  • Locker combination/organization
  • School supply management/organization
  • Assignment prioritization
  • Breaking projects and longer tasks into smaller, more doable chunks
  • Organizing and prioritizing school/home/extracurricular activities
  • Task initiation
  • Office 365 and Schoology training and/or refresher
  • Note-taking strategies
  • Test-prep and taking strategies
  • Homework strategies
  • Communication skills with adults and peers

This course will be taught by Patti Meras, MASpEd – Academic Behavioral Strategist with emphasis in ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorders & Certified Executive Functioning Coach.
